Vege.COOLiving is a pioneer initiative that aims to create awareness about the environmental and health benefits of vegan diet and to mobilize the public to pledge a healthier and greener lifestyle. On the October 1st, 2015, Friends of the Earth will launch this initiative through a sharing forum. Acclaimed environmentalists, chefs and industrial experts are invited to speak on the subject and share their insight. Along with that, the participants will be encouraged to pledge for a Green lifestyle.
The environmental movement has focused till now on changing the way industries work. Vege.COOLiving moves beyond the corporate, the government, the society and focuses on the individual. How can an individual’s living habits transform the world? Specifically- how can an individual’s eating habits transform the environment?
On an average, by choosing to be vegan, every day one can save 4000 liters of water, 20 kilos of grain, 30 sq. ft of forest, 20 pounds of CO2 and 1 animal's life. A vegan diet uses 1/2 the amount of CO2, 1/11 the amount of fossil fuels, 1/13 the amount of water and 1/18 the amount of land compared to a meat diet. It is sufficient to say that becoming a Vegan is an effective way to sustain the booming population around the world.
Eating vegan is not only better for the environment, but even for individual health. It has been found that vegans are less prone to getting heart diseases, colorectal, ovarian, and breast cancers, diabetes, obesity and hypertension. This is because a typical vegan diet is low on fat, and rich in fiber content.
Needless to say, transforming the individual diet has the potential to not only positively impact one’s own health but also the environment as a whole. Exploring this connection between the individual and the environment, Vege.COOLiving wishes to bring awareness back to the self.
